Returning to the festival is the ever-popular Community Street Theatre Day during which the streets and parks of Wānaka’s CBD take centre stage for a series of free events, performances and exhibitions.

This year’s line-up includes spectacular circus performances by the Biggest Little Circus and Silk & Circus, the wonderfully talented Centralpoint Dance Studios with a newly curated site specific dance work Surface Tension, the hugely popular United Dance Crew performing a variety of numbers including Jazz, Hip Hop and contemporary dance routines, and we’re delighted to welcome two beautiful cultural groups from Queenstown: The Wasabi Choir, a Japanese Community Choir and Qampi, a Philippine Cultural Dance group who will both share some of their traditional vocals and dance techniques.

And as if that wasn’t enough a selection of bands will be bringing an array of live music to the crowds and there will be many quirky characters and interactive activities popping up around the streets on the day.

Bike in, walk in, boat in, and enjoy a day of performances from local and national artists celebrating the vibrancy the Festival brings to the community, all against the best imaginable backdrop!

Biggest Little Circus

This show includes everything from highly skilled juggling, aerial acrobatics and even a human changing room. You can’t miss their leotards and you don’t want to miss their one-of-a-kind finale. The Biggest Little Circus is a show full of audience interaction, a whole lot of kiwi charm and plenty of lycra.

As an international festival there are four key components we look for in programming work - quality, engagement, accessibility and innovation - they tick all the boxes! - Glen Pickering, World Buskers Festival Biggest.

They created a buzz that was so vibrant and colourful! They are talented, entertaining and have incredible audience participation. —Blah Blah Marketing, NZ

Jim & Barb’s Relationship Advice Bureau

Melbourne couple, Jim & Barb are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They have remained co-dependent and dysfunctional all that time. How have they stayed together for so long?

Come and have a cup of tea with them. You can ask questions. They will give you relationship advice...and a biscuit.  They have had no training, qualifications or experience. In fact, after you speak to them, you’ll probably just be left with more questions and need to seek further professional advice.

Surface Tension

Following on from 2019’s Live:Stream in Bullock Creek and 2021’s Cross the Line at the Skatepark, Creative Director, Emma Vickers, and and Centralpoint DanceStudio Choreographers, Briony Martin and Nina Fischer bring you the third in the site-specific dance series, Surface Tension at the Wānaka Marina.

A large mixed-age group of Wānaka contemporary and ballet dancers illustrate the connection with, and sometimes tumultuous relationship of, air and water.

The dance piece explores how the mauri, the spiritual essence of these elements, themselves have a ‘dance’. The wind with a single change in direction can switch this elemental partnership of perfect stillness, tension and balance, to a sudden and seemingly orchestrated interruption, breaking the surface and whipping the water into a frenzy of waves and ripples. We breathe the air and are made of water - we too are affected by these elements. We feel the mauri - the energy and life force that connects us all.
