To a bird, an egg must surely be the ultimate symbol of hope. Three Nests is an installation made of light, sound, and found materials that creates voices for and animates the eggs of three of New Zealand’s extinct indigenous birds and tells, in their own words, their take on their own extinction.

The scripts for the piece were created by three award-winning New Zealand writers, Jamie McCaskill, Ralph MCubbin- Howell, and Claire O’Loughlin, and are voiced by a cast of six New Zealand actors, and the immersive soundscape for the entire piece was composed by Emmy-award winning composer Tane Upjohn-Beatson.

The installation creates a natural harmony between light and voice, and the three scripts are humorous, beautiful, and deeply relevant to New Zealand right now. Three Nests was originally commissioned by the NZ Festival of the Arts as a part of For The Birds. It premiered at the NZ Festival and was reviewed as one of the highlights.
