Telling the stories and getting action on climate change
Climate change and the consequences for the planet can seem remote from our everyday lives until extraordinary weather hits us. Or until we realise changes - like the receding snow-line or the rising sea-level – are moving inexorably. So how do we communicate about global warming and what is the tipping point for getting political action?
Sophie Handford founded School Strike 4 Climate which mobilised 170,000 people across the country in 2019. She is now a Kāpiti councillor chairing the Strategy, Operations and Finance committee.
Monique Kelly worked for the International Labour Organization before returning to NZ to co-found Revology and also Wao Aotearoa in Wānaka. Her focus is on action towards a thriving, low emissions future.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Jim Salinger to our panel. Dr Jim Salinger has been named the 2024 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year and is a distinguished international climate scientist. He has dedicated almost 50 years to advancing climate science, including ground-breaking research on Southern Hemisphere climate change. His most recent awards include the 2018 World Meteorological Organisation Award and the 2019 Jubilee Medal, in recognition of his lifetime achievements in climate and agricultural science.
Dr Salinger was also a close friend of Rod Oram who this session will be in memory of.
Panelists will also be joined by two senior students from Mt Aspiring College.
